01 · Journey concept

A considered route, at your pace.

Auckland → Waitomo → Rotorua → Tongariro → Wellington ⇢ Christchurch → Tekapo → Aoraki / Mount Cook → Wānaka → Te Anau → Queenstown

Use a North Island rental and a separate South Island rental, linked by a Wellington–Christchurch flight. No ferry is required. Multi-night mountain and lake bases provide alternatives when weather changes.

This is a founder-curated starting point, not a personally tested route or a fixed package. Hotels, transport and experiences are suggestions until checked and quoted for your dates. No reservations or availability are implied.

Days Overnight base Nights
1–2 Auckland 2
3 Waitomo 1

Total: 25 nights. Day 26 is departure; international journeys sit outside the stated duration. Domestic travel days are already counted.

02 · Your days

Explore, then leave space.

Open each day for its suggested plan and practical notes. Experiences are optional unless agreed in your final proposal.

Day 1 · Arrive & settle in

Overnight · Auckland

Settle into your hotel and keep the day light. A short waterfront walk and an early dinner are enough after a long journey.

Plan around: Do not start a long drive while tired; collect the car after your arrival recovery.

Day 2 · Harbour & neighbourhoods

Overnight · Auckland

Explore the harbour and choose a neighbourhood or cultural visit that interests you. Leave space for a relaxed lunch and an easy evening.

Plan around: This city day also provides recovery time before the road journey.

Day 3 · Glowworm country

Overnight · Waitomo

Drive towards Waitomo and take a guided cave visit appropriate to your mobility and comfort. Overnight nearby so the visit does not become a rushed stop between long drives.

Plan around: Prebook the chosen cave experience; access and physical requirements vary by tour.

Day 4 · Into geothermal country

Overnight · Rotorua

Continue to Rotorua and settle into your base. Choose a gentle lakefront or forest walk, then keep the evening free.

Plan around: Save major geothermal and cultural visits for a full day.

Day 5 · Geothermal landscapes & Māori culture

Overnight · Rotorua

Choose a geothermal visit and a Māori-led cultural experience. Allow enough time to engage with the interpretation rather than racing between several attractions.

Plan around: Arrange specific experiences after checking their current offering, timing and availability.

Day 6 · Hobbiton or a quieter forest day

Overnight · Rotorua

Choose an optional prebooked Hobbiton outing if film locations appeal to you. Otherwise stay local for forest walks, a café and downtime.

Plan around: Hobbiton replaces the day’s other activities; it is not an essential stop for every traveller.

Day 7 · Via Taupō & Huka Falls

Overnight · Tongariro / National Park Village

Travel south with selected stops around Taupō and Huka Falls, then continue to your Tongariro base. Prepare for the next day without filling the evening.

Plan around: Leave adequate driving and daylight time; skip stops if the journey runs longer.

Day 8 · Choose your volcanic landscape day

Overnight · Tongariro / National Park Village

Fit, prepared walkers may choose the Tongariro Alpine Crossing when conditions are appropriate. Others can enjoy a shorter open walk and viewpoints.

Plan around: The crossing is demanding and weather-dependent. Check DOC, transport and booking requirements; alpine winter conditions require specialist skills.

Day 9 · Weather buffer & breathing room

Overnight · Tongariro / National Park Village

Use today for a rescheduled walk if it is safe and feasible, or enjoy a slower day with a short outing and rest.

Plan around: A second day is flexibility, not a guarantee that the crossing will operate.

Day 10 · A full day moving south

Overnight · Wellington

Drive to Wellington with sensible breaks, then return the rental car at the agreed location or retain it until the following transfer. Keep the evening close to the hotel.

Plan around: Treat this as a transfer day, not a day to add another distant attraction.

Day 11 · Te Papa & the waterfront

Overnight · Wellington

Visit Te Papa and make time for the city’s waterfront and food scene. Choose a relaxed evening before the flight south.

Plan around: Check exhibitions and opening arrangements when dates are fixed.

Day 12 · Fly to the South Island

Overnight · Christchurch

Return the North Island car and fly to Christchurch. Collect a separate rental only when convenient, then settle into a city or airport-area base.

Plan around: The route uses a domestic flight rather than a ferry. Flight and one-way rental availability must be confirmed.

Day 13 · Towards the lakes

Overnight · Tekapo

Drive into the Mackenzie region and continue to Tekapo with time for breaks. Enjoy the lakefront after checking in.

Plan around: Avoid treating arrival day as a long hike day; driving and settling in take priority.

Day 14 · Lake time & dark skies

Overnight · Tekapo

Spend an unhurried day around the lake, with an optional suitable walk or hot-pool visit. A guided stargazing experience can be added for the evening.

Plan around: Clear skies and celestial views cannot be promised; operator cancellation terms matter.

Day 15 · Along Lake Pukaki

Overnight · Aoraki / Mount Cook

Travel via Lake Pukaki to your mountain base, stopping only where safe. If time and weather allow, take a short local walk.

Plan around: Mountain-view rooms and visibility are separate matters: a room category cannot guarantee clear weather.

Day 16 · A day beneath the mountains

Overnight · Aoraki / Mount Cook

Choose a currently open DOC walk suited to your ability, such as an appropriate Hooker Valley option if access permits. Keep a visitor-centre or short-walk alternative.

Plan around: Check current track alerts, bridge arrangements and weather; do not enter closed sections.

Day 17 · A new lakeside base

Overnight · Wānaka

Drive to Wānaka and spend the afternoon settling in beside the lake. Enjoy an easy dinner with no major activity scheduled.

Plan around: Allow time for road conditions and stops rather than relying only on navigation-app estimates.

Day 18 · Lakeshore & local exploration

Overnight · Wānaka

Choose a lakeside walk, local outing or gentle activity, then leave time for a long lunch. Keep the evening relaxed.

Plan around: An active day can be tailored to you; an iconic strenuous hike is not a default requirement.

Day 19 · Keep one day open

Overnight · Wānaka

Enjoy a rest day or choose an optional guided or self-guided walk appropriate to conditions. This also provides room to move an activity from the previous day.

Plan around: Check forecast, track status and daylight for any longer walk.

Day 20 · Towards Fiordland

Overnight · Te Anau

Drive to Te Anau, check in and take a short lakeside walk. Confirm the details for the Milford outing and keep the evening simple.

Plan around: Allow a full transfer day with breaks. Do not continue to Milford on arrival.

Day 21 · Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

Overnight · Te Anau

Take a coach-and-cruise outing from Te Anau so you can enjoy the road scenery without driving the return journey. Spend the day with Fiordland’s mountains, water and waterfalls.

Plan around: Road, weather and sailing conditions apply. Wildlife and clear mountain views are not guaranteed.

Day 22 · Fiordland at an easier pace

Overnight · Te Anau

Keep today as a weather buffer or enjoy a local walk and time by the lake. An extra major excursion is optional, not part of the core schedule.

Plan around: A cancelled Milford trip can only be moved if access and availability allow.

Day 23 · A comfortable final base

Overnight · Queenstown

Drive to Queenstown and settle in for three nights. Enjoy a waterfront stroll and a relaxed meal.

Plan around: If choosing a luxury upgrade, use this same base rather than adding another hotel move.

Day 24 · The road to Glenorchy

Overnight · Queenstown

Enjoy a scenic day towards Glenorchy, with safe viewpoint stops and a suitable short walk. Return for an easy evening.

Plan around: Choose a driver or guided outing if you prefer not to drive; weather can change visibility.

Day 25 · Your own finale

Overnight · Queenstown

Keep the final full day open for rest, a local food experience or a previously postponed activity. Leave time to pack and enjoy the surroundings.

Plan around: Optional activities require separate availability and suitability checks.

Day 26 · Onward journey

Departure · Departure from Queenstown

Return the vehicle and transfer to your onward flight. Add any required gateway overnight when flights are quoted.

Plan around: International travel days are additional; a same-day international connection is not guaranteed.

03 · Hotel selection strategy

Spend where it changes the stay.

Choose bases for access, parking and time saved on the road. Compare lake- or mountain-facing room categories explicitly; a destination photograph does not establish your room’s view. If you want a one- or two-night luxury finale, build it into the Queenstown stay.

We compare the actual room category, cancellation terms, breakfast, location and total stay cost. A premium label alone is not a reason to spend more. Named properties and prices are selected after your dates, party size and priorities are known.

Budget scope: accommodation, domestic flights where applicable, rental cars and insurance, fuel, parking, transfers, selected guides and activities, meals and applicable fees. International flights are additional. There is no confirmed total price for this concept.

04 · A shorter journey

The South Island Edit · 16 days

The South Island Edit is a complete 16-day / 15-night alternative: Christchurch 1 night, Tekapo 2, Mount Cook 2, Wānaka 3, Te Anau 3 and Queenstown 4. It removes the North Island and the inter-island flight.

Day Overnight base Suggested focus
1 Christchurch Arrival and recovery; no onward drive when tired
2 Tekapo Towards the lakes
3 Tekapo Lake time & dark skies
4 Aoraki / Mount Cook Along Lake Pukaki
5 Aoraki / Mount Cook A day beneath the mountains
6 Wānaka A new lakeside base
7 Wānaka Lakeshore & local exploration
8 Wānaka Keep one day open
9 Te Anau Towards Fiordland
10 Te Anau Milford Sound / Piopiotahi
11 Te Anau Fiordland at an easier pace
12 Queenstown A comfortable final base
13 Queenstown The road to Glenorchy
14 Queenstown Your own finale
15 Queenstown Extra day for rest or a suitable optional outing
16 Departure from Queenstown Return car and onward flight

The final row is departure with no overnight stay. The same weather, transport and activity checks apply as in the longer route.

05 · Before you go

Shape the journey around the season.

This concept favours conditions suitable for lake, road and walking days. Winter changes the driving and alpine requirements substantially. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is an optional demanding activity, not a compulsory sightseeing stop. Check DOC alerts for every planned walk, including Hooker Valley.

Allow realistic time for transfers, rest and changing conditions. A buffer day helps flexibility but cannot guarantee a replacement tour, clear view or wildlife sighting. Flight schedules, car-hire terms and access are rechecked before a proposal is confirmed.

Make it yours: share your approximate dates, party size, budget and priorities. Caron reviews the request, agrees the scope and any planning fee, and then prepares suitable options.
